Fox River Watershed Investigation Phase III: Model Calibration with Intensive Monitoring Data and Scenario Simulations

Principal Investigators: Alena Bartosova

Project Staff: William Gillespie, Mary Richardson, Marni Law, Brad McVay

Sponsor: Fox River Study Group, Inc.

Project Period: March 2010 – May 2013

In consultation with the Fox River Study Group (FRSG), the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) has proposed a multi-phase water quality study of the Fox River watershed from Stratton Dam to the Illinois River confluence. The ultimate objective of the full study is to identify significant watershed issues and implement a watershed plan that will result in delisting Fox River from the list of impaired waters in Illinois. The full study includes data collection and analysis, model development, and monitoring (as a separate project). Research findings will provide guidance for public and private planners and decision-makers. Phase I was completed in 2004 and Phase II in 2009.

Phase III continues the Fox River watershed study. The HSPF and QUAL2K models developed in Phase II will now be calibrated with intensive monitoring data sampled by and for the Fox River Study Group. The intensive sampling data collected by the ISWS in a related project are used to calibrate and validate pollutant load simulations in an HSPF model (suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, fecal coliform, biochemical oxygen demand). Low flow sampling by the FRSG in summer 2010 was used to calibrate the QUAL2K model simulating diurnal changes in Fox River's dissolved oxygen under critical conditions. The calibrated models will be used to simulate future scenarios for each model and their effects on Fox River water quality.

A database of water quality and attendant data was compiled to serve as a foundation for modeling, analysis, and comparative study and stores data collected by the Fox River Study Group as well as other organizations. Throughout the project, ISWS staff meet with the Fox River Study Group and provide project updates for review and comments as well as scientific support.
