Pool

A pool is any commonly-defined unit existing within a reservoir. For example, N in the crust of the earth can be defined as a pool of N within the terrestrial N reservoir. The estimated amount of N in the earth's soils can be defined as a pool of N. The amount of exchangeable NH4-N in the plow layer of a sampled field can be defined as a pool of N. By definition, the size of a pool within a reservoir can range from a broadly-defined global unit to a narrowly-defined localized unit.
