Illinois Drought: Update August 24, 2005, Illinois State Water Survey

Illinois Drought

Another week of rains across Illinois resulted in a state-wide rainfall total of 0.94 inches, which is 140 percent of normal rainfall for this past week (Aug. 18-24). For August so far, statewide rainfall is 3.19 inches, which is 13 percent above normal. The Water Survey maintains 18 soil moisture sites across the state. The latest report on measurements made on August 15 shows that soil moisture was at or above normal in the top six inches of soil at all sites. Dryness remains in the deeper layers. Despite the recent rains, Illinois is still 7.2 inches below normal since March 1. The driest areas are in the northern and western portions of the state where deficits are 8 to 10 inches below normal.
