Illinois Drought: Update August 11, 2008, Illinois State Water Survey

Illinois Drought

Conditions deteriorated this week as only 0.34 inches of rain fell statewide, 36 percent of normal, during the period from August 4-10. Meanwhile, temperatures were 3.9 degrees above normal. As a result, the Illinois Agriculture Statistics Service reported that surface soil moisture went from 52 percent to 68 percent in the "very short" category across the state. Much of northern and western Illinois remain in an "extreme" drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

 

"Extreme" drought is the third of four stages of drought. Much of the rest of the state is in "moderate" to "severe" drought. Only far southern Illinois is considered not in drought at this time. The forecast from the National Weather Service is calling for a more active pattern with chances of rain for the next several days.

 



For the period of March 1 to August 10, this is the fifth driest statewide since 1900:
