Gather data to enhance the evaluation of water and atmospheric resources important to Illinois.

1. Collect in the field and establish the quality of data for water quantity, water quality, water use, water treatment, climate, and air quality in the atmosphere, rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, soils, crops, aquifers, and from private individuals, government agencies, communities, academia, and industry.

2. Maintain and enhance collections of databases, documents, maps, reports, and journals produced by others.

3. Cooperate with other scientific organizations.

"To act as the central data repository and research coordinator for the State in matters related to water and atmospheric resources. The State Water Survey Division of the Department of Natural Resources, may monitor and evaluate all weather modification operations in Illinois."

Water and Atmospheric Data Recording

Permanently record in hard and electronic formats all the data and information resulting from data collection, analysis, and research.

1. Protect the integrity of existing records and seek more efficient means to store and retrieve all records.
 
2.Develop a system architecture and long term plan (IM/IT Plan) for the collection, processing, archival and back-up of data, slides, field notes, samples, etc. in accessible databases and collections.
 
3. Cooperate with other scientific organizations.
