Severe Weather in Illinois in 2008

Jim Angel, state climatologist

This year has been much more active in terms of severe weather compared to last year. As of September 1, Illinois already has 88 tornado reports compared to only 23 for the entire year of 2007. In 2007, Illinois experienced a dry spring with little opportunity for severe weather. This year has seen much more severe weather, both in Illinois and the US.

Here are snapshots of tornado, hail and wind reports for 2008 in Illinois - as of September 1. Up-to-date information for Illinois can be found at annual severe weather report summary for Illinois (NOAA)
