Lake-ICE Photos
An example of clouds observed over Lake Michigan during an intense lake-effect snowstorm. Pictured here is a "steam devil" from near the surface to the bottom of the cloud deck.    Participants in the Lake-ICE project held a Daily Planning Meeting and Weather Briefing to discuss plans for operations on the following day. These briefings were held at the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences Department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research Electra (N308D) prepares for takeoff from Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Instruments can be seen attached to the fuselage and wings of the aircraft. The ELDORA dual-Doppler radar is on the back of the aircraft (not seen here).   The University of Wyoming King Air (N2UW) sits in the hanger at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Instrumentation can be seen attached to the fuselage, wings, and a boom at the front of the aircraft.
